Overview
The curriculum is divided in to 3 Key Stages across the school. Each key stage is a progression from the last both academically and socially. This allows students to develop the skills needed to thrive in a Secondary School environment, and at a pace that suits their needs.
Key Stage 3
Year 7
The transition from Primary School is a challenge for all Year 7 students, and the traditional change to Secondary school can seem very daunting. To aid this transition, Year 7 are taught primarily by their class teacher, with consistent support from their class Teaching Assistants. Students also receive specialist teaching for some areas of the curriculum, which aids their progression from a Primary School feel curriculum to the developing independence that a Secondary School timetable can provide.
Year 8 & 9
Year 8 provides a link from the introductory year 7 curriculum to the wider year 9 curriculum by becoming less dependent on one teacher. In Year 9 students will access a full range of subjects across the curriculum with different teachers. They will develop the skills needed to prepare them for GCSE level courses. In this important transitional year, we hope that students are starting to develop the self-reliance and resilience needed to make the most of the education opportunities offered to them.
Key Stage 4
Year 10 and 11
At Key Stage 4 students will study a range of Level 2 courses leading to qualifications by the end of Year 11. At this point students will be able to select a range of subjects to study alongside the core curriculum. By widening the students experience of a range of subjects we hope that students will develop a clear idea of how they wish to progress into Key Stage 5 and beyond.
Key Stage 5 – 6th Form
Year 12, 13 and 14
The Sixth Form at Broomhill Bank School aims to provide an active learning programme in preparation for adulthood. The students’ individual timetables have a balance of academic, leisure, independence/life skills and work experience in line Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, which will develop a personalised programme towards their intended ‘destination’. During this time student will undertake a range of subjects and have the opportunity to undertake work experience and college placements.
